Thou shall not steal and give to Ichabod!

Did you hear someone took the Atheist sign that was being displayed at the Capitol Building in Olympia and dropped it off here at the KMPS studio for Ichabod Caine and the Waking Crew! An unidentified man gave the $400 dollar sign to our receptionist and asked if she could give it to Ichabod. The sign was returned and will be put back up on display at the Capitol but fencing has been put up to keep theives from taking it again!

Call me up at 1(800) 464-94FM and let me know what you think! Should they keep it up or take it down?

Foxers Boxers are a new line of ladies boxers that have a comfy waistband ending right above the jean line. Want to be voted most popular at work? Here’s how!

Step One: Increase Your Friendliness:
Friendliness is key in the workplace. Your ability to communicate with others is a huge part of how people look at you. Make an effort to be cheerful, smile often and adopt a friendly mindset through positive body language and words.

Step Two: Raise Your Relevance:
Your relevance about your wants and needs can connect you with others. The more relevant you are, the more people like you. Relevance has three levels:

Contact: Sitting next to someone at a party or visiting a neighbor will increase your likability with others using “functional distance.” It will leave them with a positive impression of you and maybe a new friend.

Mutual Interests: Having some of the same interests and experiences with others can be a way to open up and create conversation. The more you have in common, the better people can get to know you.

Value: Relevance is most strong when the value you offer meets another person’s wants and needs. This can produce positive attitudes in the person’s mind of you.

To become more relevant, find ways to connect with the interests, needs and wants of others. Know what they’re passionate about inside and outside of work. Be aware of their emotional needs and try to be there to help them out if they need someone to talk to.

Step Three: Show Empathy
To show empathy, try to see things from someone else’s point of view and relate a personal experience you have had to what they are going through. When you connect with someone’s feelings, they feel like they aren’t alone and they have someone there. Ask yourself, do I:

-Know how that person is feeling about his or her life situation these days?

-Understand what it must feel like to perform the person’s tasks day after day — be it caring for an elderly relative at home or managing a heavy workload?

-Share the same emotions about key issues?
By making yourself more emotionally available, your connection with people will grow dramatically.

Step Four: Keep It Real
It’s vital to be true to yourself and others. People can tell if your fake so to ensure you are showing people the real you, you need to:

-Do what you want to be doing in life.

-Live with purpose.

-Commit to the principles of your work.

-Be the same person on the outside as you are on the inside.-Be direct and honest with others.

The more you live by your values, the more people will see the real you!  If people think you’re not real, they will discount your friendliness, relevance and empathy and will probably dislike you.

The best things to give during one of the best times to give!

December 4th, 2008 by amylynn-kmps

food-bank.jpg

This year the holiday season could prove to be more of a struggle for more families due to the state of the economy. With thousands being laid off during this last year your help is needed more than ever. So, if you are blessed to have a little extra this holiday season, please give! Here are some things food banks are saying are the best things to give:

• Proteins. Tuna, chicken, fish and peanut butter are too expensive for food banks to buy in large quantities but all four contain major protein and are low in saturated fat.

Soups and stews: They are often filled with protein and vegetables which can be filling and contains liquid for hydration.

• Cereal and oatmeal: Most cereals and oatmeal contains a variety of vitamins and minerals.

• Canned fruits: A small amount of Vitamin C is lost in the canning process, making these a very healthy choice this holiday season.

What goes up when the economy goes down?

December 4th, 2008 by amylynn-kmps

spam1.jpgno_smoking.jpggoodwill.jpg

We are officially in a recession. Most companies are struggling but there are some trends that are staying strong and will stand the test of time! Here are a few things that will keep going up in a down economy:

Cheap food — Spam is big buy right now and is expected to be even bigger in ‘09. The Hormel Foods Corporation factory employees are working seven days a week to keep up with the demand. Other comfort foods Americans may be consuming a lot of is macaroni and cheese, Jell-O, and Kool-Aid this holiday season and into the coming year.

Old habits — New Year’s resolutions are still a few weeks away but it looks like many smokers are calling it quits because the price of cigarettes are too much. But, a recent survey by the American Legacy Foundation also found that some former smokers are starting to smoke again because of financial stress. And some current smokers are smoking more.

Second-hand merchandise — It might be cold outside but yard sales are still in full swing. While it’s slightly awkward to be hitting up yard sales in winter coats, yard sale season is stretching way beyond the summer months as shoppers look for deals and sellers are looking for extra cash. And though most other commercial retailers are facing a slump in sales, profits continue to go up at Goodwill centers.

Career alternatives – Many Americans are being laid off so where should you turn to learn a new trade, community college! Schools are expecting record levels of students and a recent rise in military recruitment is reportedly coming from the same pool of workers looking for alternatives.

Shared living spaces — You may have shared an apartment or house with a few of your friends in college but now many Americans are facing a financial crunch and are renting out spare rooms or bunking up with tenants.
